What is your job?
My title is Traffic Services Assistant. There is a lot of behind-the-scenes data management with information, court work, tickets and suspensions. But it can change on a dime. You’re constantly being called away from what you’re doing. I’m looking things up, calling tow trucks, working with prosecutions, dealing with people who want to contest tickets, preparing court packs for criminal charges… there’s a lot of variety, day-to-day.
What do you like about your job?
I like being the person people ask for information, and I like knowing where to find it. I was a librarian in a past life, so I like being a resource. I like being able to put people in touch with other people that can help them. Making connections and telling people what their next steps would be—I like providing information.
We have a lot of members who have not moved. This unit is a specialty unit, so a lot of them come and stay. They like the area; they like the work. It’s got a nice routine to it, but then there’s enough different things happening in the day that they don’t get bored.
Sometimes we get officers coming in from other detachment areas, and they don’t know the families or the histories, so we provide a little bit of backstory where it might keep them safe or give them a different perspective on how to handle these clients.
What made you want to work with the RCMP?
When this job was posted, it looked interesting. I met all the qualifications, so this seemed like something that could stretch my brain a little more and give me a peek behind the curtain of federal policing, which was very interesting to me.
I think what our members are doing is so important: to keep everybody safe. So, if I can do anything from behind my computer or my phone to help them keep our roads safer for Manitobans and Canadians, that’s a good day.
“We are a face that is reassuring to people. We’re invested in our communities.”
