E Division

How do RCMP operations continue in the event of foreseen or unforeseen circumstances? They think ahead and plan for everything. Debra is the Manager and one of only two people in BC who design the plans that ensure detachments, district offices, headquarter units and provincial Operational Communication Centres continue to operate and provide services to Canadians in the event of emergencies and/or disruptions.

What is business continuity, and how does it relate to your position?

Business continuity is about having a plan in place that ensures the RCMP continues to provide services to the public in the event of an emergency, like wildfires, or planned disruption, like renovations. My job is to make sure that every level of the RCMP has a business continuity plan, and that it’s renewed every year. We also provide emergency management for the Division, and we are the Divisional Emergency Operations Center (DEOC) when activated.

What brought you to the RCMP?

I was in banking for 10 years before I joined the RCMP as a 911 dispatcher. I loved dispatching—I did it for six years and I still think it’s the best job in the world. Family responsibilities required that I swap from shift work to a desk job. I worked as an Intelligence Researcher, then a Tactical Researcher, before landing with Business Continuity. I love my job.

What do you like about your job?

I like the variety. I get to work with all ranks and types of staff within the RCMP—Business Continuity Plan Coordinators (the people who execute the plans on-location) can be anyone from a Detachment Clerk to Superintendents. The enthusiasm and commitment they have for taking care of their workplace is wonderful. All the people I’ve worked with have a common cause of wanting to do good.
