What do you do on a day-to-day basis?
My unit is responsible for delivering 11 courses to all categories of employees in BC in terms of the records management system. We create the lesson plans and teach all four applications that make up the program, including the newly adopted prisoner booking system.
We created a training server that’s available provincially. It’s available to everyone to use out in the field and we use it in our courses. I built the first three versions of the server from scratch, including all the workflows and files.
What do you like about working for the RCMP?
I like the people I meet. I like being able to help, and the people I work with are great. The people in the classrooms that we have day in-and-day-out are fantastic. It’s social, and it’s a challenge.
What’s your favorite course to teach?
The prisoner booking systems course. On the guard and uniformed member side of the course, they learn about the cameras, capture electronic fingerprints, and it’s so much more interactive. For the records side, the course is also very hands-on. A lot of the staff really want the course and are grateful for the information.
How’d you get involved with the RCMP?
I started my RCMP career as a 911 dispatcher. I’ve run the gamut of a lot of the different jobs at the RCMP and it really helps me understand where everyone is coming from.
Have you always wanted to work for the RCMP?
Yes, since I was five years old. I think it’s because my earliest recollection of the RCMP was Canada Day at Spruce Meadows in Calgary when women were just starting to join the force. I am the first one in my family to work for the RCMP, but most of my family is in public service.
