In 2022, the Canadian Police College delivered 200 courses to over 3,600 participants.

The CPC currently offers more than 50 advanced and specialized courses and workshops.

The College has an international mandate that offers training and capacity building to foreign police partners.

What do you do for your work?

Danielle (instructional designer): We work with instructors and subject matter resources to design and develop courses. We identify the needs, model them and develop the right course formula.

Rose-Marie (instructional designer): Because we are such a small team, we do it all from A to Z. We look at evaluations from past courses and try to implement those recommendations to improve the courses.

For example, there is a forensics course that takes nine weeks. From an instructional design perspective, we actively work to reduce in-class time by converting select theoretical components into online, self-directed learning. This approach helps minimize the time learners must spend away from home, while maximizing their time on-site for hands-on practice, which is the core value of attending in person.

I find out more about what already exists out there and try to implement best practices here. How can we build on that? Who do we bring in? Who are the experts in this domain? Who is the instructor working with? We learn at the same time—I have gained valuable knowledge from every course that I have been assigned to work on.

Filomena (manager): My team is like the nucleus of the College as it pertains to training. My role as a manager is to manage the Academic Directives, the Adjunct Faculty Program, the Three-Year review Cycle, establish academic partnerships and manage a team of instructional designers and e-learning developers.

“We’re like the nucleus of the College.”
