How did you get started in this role?
I was in university completing a degree in Kinesiology, and then I came across specific certifications, so I became a certified personal trainer first, and then clinical exercise physiologist. I was working with the military for a year just after I had finished university, and this role came up. It was timing, really. There’s only one in Newfoundland and Labrador, so it’s kind of a big geographic footprint.
What do you like about your job?
It’s very rewarding. I like doing the fitness testing, I like the importance of the fitness testing. If the regular members are fit to go out into the field, I know they are keeping themselves, each other and the public safe. They have a better chance of keeping people safe if their overall wellness is in check. I like knowing that I help people.
What is required to do your job?
It’s high level for what they need, so we have to keep up our certifications. Every year, we have to make sure we have all kinds of personal development credits, we do courses, and we read articles. We stay on top of the fitness world as much as we can, so the members get the best information available.
“I like knowing that I help people.”
