What is your job?
I am a Detachment Services Assistant here in Brandon. Down in Brandon you do everything from small tasks like ordering jugs of water because you can’t drink the water in the building to taking calls from the general public. It goes from one extreme to the other.
What do you like about your job?
Well, I still like it because I haven’t retired yet. I will know when it’s time to go, but I’ve always liked clerical work and it’s just a whole different ballgame with the RCMP. You see everything. In the beginning days working in Thompson, we worked shiftwork and when I worked a Saturday, I was the only one there. One time they needed someone further up north in Brochet to be present for a statement. They flew a police plane down, picked me up, and then flew me back and I finished the rest of my shift that day. Who gets to do that in most jobs?
What made you want to work with the RCMP?
I worked for a lawyer’s office in Thompson and in 1985 a position at the RCMP came open. I got the job and I’ve been here ever since. What’s kept me here is the work and the camaraderie. Over the years I have worked with so many members. One member in particular that I started with, I now have worked with their daughter.
“What’s kept me here is the work and the camaraderie.”
