What is your job at the RCMP?

We assist the members with their investigations. We do database checks, compile the information and provide it in a report. Then the investigators work with that information for their files.

We also do input for other provinces, for provincial and municipal police agencies. They give us information then we do the searches and provide them with the results.

It all depends on what the file is. We also provide background checks so it could be for a new hire for Canadian Border Service Agency or different things like that.

What does a regular day look like?

The information is different every day. The tasks can be repetitive, so we do rotations. One day you’ll work on Civilian Review and Complaints Commission (CPAC) files, and then the next day, you’ll do the Automated Criminal Intelligence Information System (ACIIS). Then you’ll do database checks, and the next day you’ll do purge reports. We try to switch it up so you’re not doing the same thing.

How many people are in your unit?

We have one manager, two supervisors, and six staff for the entire province of Ontario.

What do you like about your job and working for the RCMP?

I like the work. I like the group of people I work with. And I like the outcome of investigations—that my work makes a direct difference.

I like getting follow-ups from investigators about the end of projects: arrests and stuff like that. Sometimes it’s in the paper and you’re reading about a case you helped with. That’s really rewarding.

People often don’t realize how intricate everything is, but many members respect our work, know what we do and understand the value of it.
